Battleground Charleston!
If you all need us to remind you of the strategic, military, or political importance of Charleston to The American South 1861 – 1865, then go away, we ain’t doin’ it. Even if all you know about is Fort Sumter, The Hunley, and Battery Wagner, that should be good enough.
The Yankees knew the importance of Charleston back in those days, for sure. They landed two divisions on James Island in June of 1862 and tried to conquer us through the marshes. They sent a flotilla of ironclads into our fair harbor on April 7, 1863 and tried to conquer us by sea. Then they landed troops on Morris Island and initiated a bombardment of our lovely city that lasted 587 days. Charleston was reduced to ruins, but never surrendered.
And the Yankees know it today. On May 30, 2020 a vulgar mob rampaged down King Street and desecrated our memorial the Confederate Defenders of Charleston. In June they knocked down our statue of John C. Calhoun. Sometime in July of 2021 our Lee Highway marker disappeared into the night.
Charleston was a battleground 1861 – 1865, and she remains a battleground today. We cleaned the statue in 2020, we reinstalled the Lee Highway marker on a cold December night in 2025, and we’re working hard on John C. Calhoun today. Join us in the fight!
